What’s in your medicine cabinet?

September 24, 2008 by michelleatnarconon
What’s In Your Medicine Cabinet?

If you have Oxycodone in the cabinet and kids in the house, beware. According to scientists at Rockefeller University adolescents are more likely to become addicted to Oxycodone than adults.

The research was done on mice and though we cannot be sure that adolescent humans react the same as adolescent mice, common sense dictates that drugs and developing brains are not a good combination.

Regardless of the obvious physical developmental problems for addicted kids, mental and ethical development is also stunted. When they should be learning life’s important lessons and opening the books, these kids are busy hunting drugs so they don’t have to experience the anguish of withdrawal. Fighting withdrawal can be an all consuming job, with time for little else.

Some kids get off drugs and open their eyes to the world, only to realize that they haven’t been to a movie or really had a good time for years. A frequent comment is “I didn’t know I could have this much fun straight.”

Life is great without pills. Give your kids the chance to learn this and lock up the prescription medicine.

If they have already gotten on the path of addiction, get them off fast and call Narconon at 877-413-3073. We are a drug treatment center with a 76% success rate.

Drugs in our Communities

September 28, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

Drug Prevention in Drug Free Communities

Investing in drug prevention is worthwhile according to a new report from the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The report says that alcohol and drug use is down in those communities with Drug Free Coalition Funding – in fact, 10 to 23 % lower than the national average.

Though the financial gain to a community and a country cannot probably be accurately assessed at this time, the long term gain is apparent. Fewer drug abusers means less crime, more productivity and fewer health problems.

The Drug Free Communities are made of community leaders, teachers etc and grants are available for those organizations that facilitate citizen participation.

The value of life is improved for individuals and their families and money can be spent on vacations, rather than rehab.

This is probably the most logical and sound investment that any of us have seen in a long time, with a realistic and measurable return on investment. Let’s hope more get involved.

Recovery Month coming to an end….

September 29, 2008 by michelleatnarconon
Recovery Month

As Recovery Month is ending, we pay tribute to those who brought the message of effective drug prevention and workable treatment to their communities.

Above all, we salute those who had the courage to begin or continue their drug or alcohol treatment and extend our good wishes for complete recovery.

Around the world this month, community events and lectures brought home the fact that addiction can be prevented or alleviated.  For once, through combined efforts, perhaps the voices promoting a drug free life were louder than the social climates or advertisements that entice with the allure of complete medicinal solutions for every problem.

Narconon of Georgia set up a booth at a large county fair for two weeks.  Kids were a toy after reading, agreeing to and signing a drug free pledge.  Every parent was happily involved in making sure their child understood what they were signing.

Others came to the staff and volunteers in the booth seeking help for addiction, either for them selves or a family member.  The booth was busy the entire time, making clear the fact that addiction in indeed a wide spread problem and people are eager for solution.  It was also quite evident that people often do not know where to go for solutions.

Every month is recovery month at Narconon of Georgia and we are here to service.  Please let us know if someone you know needs drug treatment.

We have a 76% success rate – we are the New Life Program.

Mandatory Sentencing

September 29, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

According to a recent poll, sixty percent of Americans oppose laws mandating minimum prison terms for non-violent crimes, such as drug offenses, according to the Christian Monitor.

Mandatory sentencing means that there is no individual justice. A Judge, upon seeing someone turn their life around, after a drug related brush with the law, must give them the same sentence as someone who has no intention to improve their lot. The only similarity is the drugs they were caught with.  This leaves the courts, not the Judges imposing the sentence.

This means that more individuals realize that mandatory sentencing laws for drug possession can make effective drug rehab meaningless in the eyes of the law. An offender, who is a drug abuser, may be charged with a drug related crime, graduate from successful drug treatment and turn their life around, only to be sent to prison. There is no one who benefits from this and society could lose potentially productive individuals to prison where they are likely to be ruined.

Is it any wonder that we have the highest per capita rate of incarceration in the world?

Hopefully the public will make their voices heard about this issue. After all, they are the ones footing the bill.

Drug Dealers

October 3, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

Have you ever noticed on TV how broke some drug dealers actually appear?  The COPS show often features an army of police charging into the house where the dealer lives. The house usually does not have many people in it – not enough to warrant a whole platoon barging in. There are often children, enveloped in squalor, with a bleary eyed dealer father staggering in front of the camera to be arrested.

The dealer was probably lured into thinking he could make big money by dealing, but at least the dealers we see on TV aren’t making the big bucks.  There is always someone at the bottom of the money chain, making pennies on the dollar compared to their upline’s take.  Hopefully some big guys get arrested, but we don’t see it.

Whether it is crack cocaine, pot or heroin – the risks are the same.  Someone who sells drugs is putting their whole future on the line.  In addition to stunting their education and careers, they risk losing everything to jail and an indelible record, which limits career opportunity.

If they are dealing to feed their own addiction, the situation is even worse.

Anyone alive deserves better than this.

If you know someone needs drug treatment and is going down a wrong path, get them into effective drug treatment.

LSD on the rise

October 3, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

LSD is on the rise and we need to educate our kids before it slips into the culture in a bigger way.  It’s easy to think of LSD as a thing of the past – something that the hippies used in the 60’s and 70’s.  Indeed there has been little that has come up in recent years about LSD.  However, with reports that it is again making an appearance we need to make sure that kids know the following:

Ø  LSD is a mind altering drug and the effects can last for up to 12 hours.

Ø  A person on LSD never knows if they are going to have a good trip or a bad trip.

Ø  LSD can cause hallucinations and loss of sense of direction and time.  It can also cause thoughts of dying.

Ø  There are reports of people who have never gotten over a bad trip and were impaired for many years after.

Hopefully if we get the word out, LSD will remain a part of history.

If you know someone, young or old who has done LSD they can be helped by the Narconon New Life Detoxification Program.

Success Story from an employee

October 7, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

In recent years, I have triumphed over great tragedy.  When I think about the things I’ve had to overcome I am gratful and appreciate life more now than I ever did.  One of these being addiction, for 7 yrs I was consumed by an addiction to crystal meth precious time was wasted not knowing from one day to the next if I would ever reach a normal life.  The world was revolving and I was not part of it.  Then I found NARCONON and my life changed.  I have developed close relationships with members of my family and I have acheieved stability and independence.
I have learned so much within the last recent years about treasuring that which means the most in knowing when to let go.  Letting go is something is not so easy.  Letting go is something painful but in order to survive we have to.  For now, I am single and current living in Midtown where I hope to reconnect with old friends and make new ones in this new life I have successfully created for myself.  I look forward to the future with new and happy memories.

Narconon gets plaque for it’s help!

October 7, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

Narconon of Georgia has a new plaque.  An orphanage in Honduras sent it in thanks to Narconon, a non-12 step drug rehab, for establishing a sauna and exercise program for drug addicted orphans.

As a long term non traditional drug treatment center, Narconon of Georgia helped a Honduran medical doctor establish the Narconon New Life Detoxification Program in this orphanage to aid in the growing epidemic of addicted street orphans in their country. The sauna program had astounding results with the children as reflected by the words on the plaque: “With eternal gratitude to Narconon of Georgia and to each of you for your personal dedication to the training of our staff, so that the children can live free of drugs and prosper.”

The children also sent handmade Christmas cards reflecting the relief they felt after completing the sauna program: Gerson, a 17 year old addict, wrote, “When I finished sauna I felt different, for example I no longer think of drinking liquor or smoking tobacco. I am happier then ever.” Kevin, 16 years old, stated: “I haven’t met you but I am very happy because you helped me by bringing the sauna, and I no longer have cravings for drugs.”

Narconon of Georgia is a non-traditional drug abuse treatment program which was founded in 1967 whose mission also includes drug education and working with children.  While many drug rehab statistics are nebulous, Narconon boasts a 76% success rate (based on a two year follow-up) through a non-12 step drug treatment program.  This program provides body detoxification through a sauna and exercise program that helps eliminate or reduce cravings.  After the sauna program, the client learns those life skills essential to success in life and the ability to stay clean.  They graduate from Narconon with a life plan and continued support to make sure they make it in life.

October 7, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

Narconon Drug Rehab students visited a local nature trail this weekend as they practiced lessons learned at Narconon about taking responsibility for their environment.

Paint brush in hand, they helped paint the offices and later cleaned the park area.

“We feel we haven’t completed our job unless we not only get our customers off drugs, but on the road to a happy productive life,” comments Ms. Mary Rieser, Executive Director of Narconon Drug Rehab GA. “Part of making them happy, valuable and productive citizens is covered in the last part of their program, The Way To Happiness Course.

“In this course they learn a non-religious moral code, in The Way To Happiness, written by L. Ron Hubbard, which, if followed, can lead them on The Way to Happiness. ‘Safeguard and Improve Your Environment’ is one of the precepts learned, and helping at the local nature trail was not only fun, but educational.”

The Nature Center is a nonprofit 501-c3 organization established by community volunteers in 1990 to develop, improve, and preserve twenty-two acres of DeKalb County’s Dunwoody Park as a natural classroom for environmental education.

The park features a wetland boardwalk; woodland and streamside trails; display gardens; a picnic meadow; a treehouse classroom pavilion; and a shaded playground.

“We all had a lot of fun at the nature center,” comments Ms. Rieser. “Beating drug addiction is not just stopping using drugs. It’s about learning to live life responsibly, learning to live drug-free, learning to appreciate life.”

What’s in your medicine cabinet? (cough and cold)

October 9, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

WHAT’S IN YOUR MEDICINE CABINET?

Drug makers announced yesterday that over- the-counter cough and cold medicine should not be given to children younger than four years old. This announcement was accompanied by plans for new measuring devices and child resistant packaging.

This announcement came after a flurry of protest, especially from the medical community about the marketing of these products to young people. 7000 children a year visit the emergency rooms because of complications from cold and cough medicine, many of them because parents don’t understand how to correctly dispense these drugs.

The validity of dispensing cold and cough medication to children is still not resolved and there seems to be very little evidence that these medications are actually helpful. While there is more work to be done to keep our kids safe from the medicine cabinet, this announcement was a move in the right direction.

In a small way it demonstrates that it is possible for responsible citizens and professionals to make a difference with big Pharma. The consumer is ultimately in control as is always the case in free enterprise. It is a matter of ensuring that consumers are informed so they can take appropriate action -the public obviously will refuse to buy products that are harmful. They just have to know.

With prescription drug abuse eclipsing illegal drug abuse, responsibility for drug prevention and education has squarely arrived on the doorstep of the Medical Community. They did fairly well on this one – let’s hope they continue.

Call Narconon of Georgia if you know someone who is abusing cold medication. Many cold medications contain DXM. DXM can make a person high, is addictive and can cause long term physical and mental damage.

Oil Companies Take Action but they need to do more

It is a great idea that gas stations are taking measures to ensure that they are not the purveyors of cigarettes to underage smokers, but what about the drug paraphernalia that is in many of these locations.

Blunts, crack pipe, papers and scales are for sale, along with other items and most likely minors can buy these quite easily. The places are magnets for dealers – what better place to find your customers?

Cleaning up our gas station/convenience stores starts really with each of us, not the oil companies.

Next time you are at a convenience store check to see what paraphernalia is for sale. Note down the address and inform others in the neighborhood what is really going on in these places. The majority of citizens don’t want drugs in their neighborhood.

Also look around your environment. If items like spoons, light bulbs and brillo pads are out of place, look for the drug addict in your life and get them some help.

Those struggling with addiction or those who want more information on how to clean up their community can visit www.drugsno.com or call 877-413-3073.

Together we can take back our communities. It is up to us.

Alcohol Among Teenagers

October 10, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

Drinking Problems Start at an Early Age

I have had the privilege of interviewing hundreds of persons who have come to Narconon in order to conquer their drug or alcohol addiction. I have learned first hand through these interviews that most of those who have a bad drinking problem started at an early age. Whether they found the liquor in the family bar or got it from the next door neighbor, many of our clients started secretly drinking at an early age – 12 to 14 for many of them.

The individuals who market for the liquor industry also apparently know that long term drinkers start at an early age. There would be no other reason for the large amount of advertising money that they are obviously spending on targeting youth as customers for their brew.

Fortunately, there are more concerned families than there are persons marketing for liquor companies. We just have to alert families and let them know what they can do in order to send a message to make this marketing to their children stop.

This article does just that – Pass it along.

I hope that you don’t already have someone in your family who has a drinking problem, but if you do call 877-413-3073

What’s in your medicine cabinet?

October 14, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

WHAT’S IN YOUR MEDICINE CABINET?

Sadly, the mother of Aaron Mason is on the wrong side of drug education and prevention-she learned too late about the dangers of prescription drugs and lost her son.

Now her voice is amongst the growing number of concerned citizens that are sounding the alarm – prescription medications are making their way from the medicine cabinet into the school yard.   Traveling far from their designated recipient Xanax, morphine, Valium, Percocet and Oxycontin are taken from the family medicine cabinet and brought to school, passed around and often ingested right on the school grounds.

Often these drugs are the theme of “pharm” parties, where the “party goers” are too bleary eyed and doped up to have a good time.

Parents should suspect that their children are being exposed to these drugs in one way or another – even if they are just aware of the fact that they are at school.   It is something that must be brought up around the dinner table, because if kids don’t learn the truth about drugs at home, they are going to learn the lies about drugs at school.

If parents find any pharmaceutical drugs they should immediately suspect that there is probably already some element of addiction and get their kid some help- fast. These drugs are dangerous and addictive and are nothing to play around with.

If you need to know the signs of drug abuse or what to do with someone you know is already abusing drugs, then call Narconon. We will send you a free brochure on the signs of drug abuse and help educate you on drug rehab.

Success Objectives

October 14, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

This is a success from a Narconon drug treatment student, currently enrolled in the program.

“This course has shown me that I am a part of the overall environment and I have value. As I have been moving through this course I have become more aware of myself. I see my environment in a way I never have before and I am more aware of myself and others.

I know that the value that I place on myself has increased. How I treat others reflects how I treat myself. How I treat my environment reflects how I treat myself. It seems that when I orient myself correctly in my environment, when I am aware of others in my environment and when I realize I am more than just another object, I begin to assign better values to myself and those around me.

What once seemed very important now seems less important.

Where I look myself for granted or abused myself I now find something precious.”

Drugs on the Internet

October 20, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

INTERNET DRUG TALK

Online seems to be the place to be if you want to promote drug abuse or find out how to do it.  According to this survey teens watch drug use and see people high on social networking groups like MySpace.

As the article points out, a parent would not allow someone in their house that was promoting drug abuse, yet that is what is happening when someone gets online and talks to your kid about drugs.  This is how kids learn about “robo tripping, pharm parties and how to buy xanax on line.

Parents need to control communication in the household regarding drugs.  They should kick the bad guys out and hold court with their kids.  Tell them the truth about drugs – probably no one else is.

If you need drug educational materials, call Narconon.  877-413-3073

If someone you know needs treatment we have a 76% success rate.

Drug Talk during the Presidential Campaign

October 21, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

Wrong Message?

The New York Times has been blasting Cindy McCain and seems to be taking issue with the fact that Senator McCain married a human – a human who spends her spare time being a saint every once in a while when she does charity work.

One point of attack is her past bout with addiction. Why should the public be anything but forgiving about this? After all, the wife of a past president opened up a rehab center after dealing with her own addiction. The daughters of the current president apparently had a brush with drugs and we all remember Clinton’s apparent anguish over his brother’s cocaine problem. Anyone reading the New York Times has most likely been impacted in some way by drug abuse and not likely to be shocked by yet another public figure admitting that they live on the same planet as the rest of us.

Cindy McCain’s honesty about her past problem serves her country well. Such honesty from such a poised and attractive woman can reduce the stigma and encourage the secretly addicted hockey moms to get help for their prescription drug abuse.  If such an elegant woman can admit to a problem, then maybe it won’t be so bad for others to report their own drug problems and get some help.

Criticizing Cindy McCain in veiled ways about her past drug abuse will push some back into the dark corners of the closet – a dangerous place to be when it comes to drugs.

Prescription Drug abuse is on the rise. Drug companies sell a lot of drugs and they have to wind up somewhere. Truth is they often wind up in the hands of good people who never had an inkling they could get addicted.

Well done to anyone who publicly admits they had a drug problem and it was overcome.

We all need a bit of good news every once in a while.

NARCONON success story!

October 24, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

SUCCESS STORY FROM A NARCONON STUDENT

After being at Narconon for only a week I have already seen a huge change in my personality. The biggest change I have noticed was in my comfort level. The day I arrived at the facility, I was a nervous wreck. I really didn’t know what to expect, never having been to a rehabilitation center before. By the end of the first day, I was made to feel more welcome and at home than I had in months. I was expecting a lockdown but what I got was more like a family. I have received nothing but open arms, respect and utmost kindness. Through the help of the various treatments such as nerve assists and training routines I have reached a much more peaceful and calm state of being.   The educational films and conversations have made me realize the true dangers of my lifestyle and I see the need for a change. I really can’t say enough good things about the people the people or the program. I have great anticipation for the rest of my treatment and eagerly await the sauna portion of the program.

Are kids really that smart?

October 24, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

ARE THEY REALLY THAT SMART?

The study from Ireland that finds that children with a higher intelligence are more likely to have drinking problems later is interesting, but there are a lot of questions that are not answered, at least by the summary of the study.

Are intelligent people generally not challenged enough academically to keep them mentally occupied?

Are intelligent people unable to deal with the realities of a harsh world that perhaps they see more clearly because of their intelligence?

Is it a liability in this world to be intelligent and some advantage to “dumbing down” (as obviously occurs with alcohol)?

Perhaps the most important question is – How smart is someone really if they insist on over indulging in alcohol?

Sometimes, no matter how “smart” they are, people who drink too much cannot think for themselves and need some help.

If you know someone who abuses alcohol, call Narconon for a 76% success rate.

Helping the Native Americans

October 28, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

RESPONSIBILITY

From the time that the white man introduced blankets with small pox, the Native American population has not fared well from the white man’s trinkets and customs.

White man’s “fire water” has continued to take a huge toll on the lives of Native Americans – 12% of the deaths in that population are due to alcohol. This is three times the national average.

The white man did not need to bring small pox to dwindle the numbers of Indians. The inadvertent introduction of alcohol to these peoples has somehow sinisterly perpetuated the initial destructive intent of the Europeans who came to take their land.

No one is bent on destroying the Native Americans now and they have even been helped to build casinos which apparently are helping their tribes.

But the problem with alcohol seems constant and one that they cannot fix themselves.

Narconon in Oklahoma has taken responsibility and in the past has offered their services in terms of facilities and drug education.

Narconon of Georgia is willing to provide drug education if we are asked.

Let’s take responsibility for our fellows.

Fake Drug Tests

October 28, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

PARENTS TAKE ACTION

Who would have thought that we would ever see the day that parents would feel the need to hire police dogs to see if their kids have drugs. It seems far-fetched, but it is happening and the reasons are easily understood.

Drug tests can be fooled which can be extremely dangerous. A parent may be content thinking that their teen is not taking drugs, when the actual fact is that the teen is faking the test results. There was a recent report of an overdose when a family thought their son had stopped using opiates because he had a clean drug test. The truth was that he was cheating the test and overdosed and died. He had been using drugs in their presence, but they were looking at the tests, not him.

Additionally, with all the peer pressure and MTV, it is almost impossible for a teen to escape the opportunity to use drugs. Some of them may simply be using drugs because their friends are and inadvertently become addicted through the social drug use. Then the real problems for the family of theft, possible jail time and death begin. A police dog might be a welcome relief – a good excuse to tell the friends why drugs cannot be around.

Another solution is for parents to learn the signs of abuse of the major drugs – methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, and opiates. They all have their own signs and one can tell by observing if they are in the midst of a drug abuser.

However they do it parents have to know if their child is on drugs. Failing to find out can be fatal.

Narconon will provide free brochures to families who want to know the signs of drug abuse. We also provide effective drug treatment – 76% success rate.

Today is Election Day

November 4, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

ELECTION DAY

All of us in the field of drug and alcohol drug treatment hope that our newly elected officials come to realize that their policies can definitely have an impact on the lives of many when it comes to drug treatment versus incarceration.

However, no matter who is elected, the real drug policy is written at home and is enforced by parents.

Research shows that many kids attend drug infested schools and most are likely to have been exposed to illegal drugs and drinking. Research also finds that kids listen to their parents when it comes to drugs and are less likely to use drugs if they think their parents would object.

The point is, if your kids don’t do ever abuse drugs then whatever national strategy is developed will not involve you or your family.

After all, isn’t there enough government already?

If someone you know has already started abusing drugs, then call Narconon 877-413-3073.

Rehab vs. Incarceration

November 20, 2008 by michelleatnarconon

REHAB VERSUS INCARCERATION

This recent study confirms what those of us who have worked in rehab already knew – Rehab does make a difference and is a viable alternative to incarceration.   It is a better alternative for the addict, family and society.

Drug addicts already have a lowered sense of self esteem. Their addiction has driven them to do things that they would not ordinarily do and they feel ashamed. Jail just confirms what they are already starting to believe – that they are no good and there is no hope.

Drug treatment, on the other hand and at the very least, provides a caring atmosphere from which a person can get clean and examine who they really are. Upon examination, most individuals learn that they are basically good people who simply took a wrong turn. From this viewpoint it is easy to decide to learn from rehab and take a new direction in life.

Locking someone up confirms that notion that one is no good. It is not wonder that crime rates are higher when drug addicts are locked up.

Narconon is a good alternative to incarceration and in fact, this Narconon was started as an alternative to incarceration. The first 20 Narconon of Georgia clients came directly from jail as part of a pilot to determine the feasibility of rehab vs. incarceration.

Whether it is crack cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana oxycontin or any other drug, the results are the same. Most people can either be fully rehabilitated from addiction or they can be pushed further into the mud and their lives totally ruined.

It is up to us to say which that will be.

Prescription Drugs

July 2, 2009 by michelleatnarconon

Michael Jackson’s Death Calling Attention to Prescription Drug Abuse

Close friend to Jackson, Deepak Chopra, reported that Jackson had asked him for prescriptions to pain killers in the past. Chopra said that he then realized that Michael must have been asking many people for prescriptions to the powerful drugs.
In an article in the Huffington Press, Chopra in part blames Jackson’s dependence on these drugs on medical colleagues who failed to realize Jackson’s growing addiction could lead to his death.
Jackson is known to have taken prescriptions ranging from Xanax to Demerol.
Oxycodone and hydrocodone are both synthetic opiate pain relievers similar to Demerol which Jackson is reported to have been injected with shortly before his cardiac arrest.
It is unfortunate that prescription drug abuse becomes alive as a topic for media discussion after a celebrity death. Anna Nicole’s and Heath Ledger’s deaths took center stage earlier, but the problem with prescription medication abuse continued to increase and emergency rooms are still seeing too many accidental overdoses.
In a recent press conference Joseph A. Califano Jr., the National Center on Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University’s director and president said:
“Aggressive marketing of controlled drugs to physicians . . . is designed to increase profits with little regard for abuse potential, Our nation is in the throes of an epidemic of controlled prescription drug abuse and addiction.”

The ease by which many Americans can get a prescription for powerful pain medications and psychiatric drugs is alarming.
More than 15 million Americans abuse controlled substances—double the amount from a decade ago, according to a report issued by CASA. This represents a clear problem for America because there is virtually no increase in drug treatment available and no controls on marketing.
Narconon of Georgia provides drug treatment and education for the entire southeast region. Narconon Drug Rehab of Georgia is a non-traditional drug abuse treatment program.

Reflection

July 2, 2009 by michelleatnarconon

NARCONON REFLECTION

Here is a Narconon reflection – written by someone who was abusing alcohol – but written for anyone who is abusing any drug.  Whether it is oycontin, adderal, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine or any drug of abuse, the Narconon program is here to help you.

“Today in class I learned that pinpointing my problem and releasing my energy on it – I can let the thought pass.  I think a problem is a kind of blemish to my well being and healthy life style – a blemish that can vanish with the right medicine.  The medicine is how I handle situations – and I can handle them the right way from now on from what I have learned.

The medicine is also in my action and thoughts.  I will use my mind and strength to touch and get what I want.  It is my choice, now that I know right from wrong.

I am a stronger individual today.

This can also apply to unhealthy relationships, friendships and disagreements.

I believe that sometimes it is just better to let things go and avoid trouble in my life.”

Simple realizations like this can take the course of someone’s life and move it in a different direction.

Community Service

May 20, 2009 by michelleatnarconon

http://michelleatnarconon.shoutpost.com/71866/community-service

A new Community Services Brochure sponsored by Narconon International, located in Hollywood, California, features the efforts made by Narconon of Georgia staff in helping an orphanage that deals in drug-addicted orphans.

Narconon Drug Rehab of Georgia staff have a special place in their heart for children,” commented Mary Rieser, Executive Director for Narconon Drug Rehab of Georgia. “It is one thing to admit a full grown adult  into drug rehab, but to see a young child passed out in the streets because they are drunk or high is very sad. These children have no hope unless we do something about it.”

The latest information, which is not verified, and is probably impossible to verify, is that there are tens of millions of homeless children wandering the streets of cities across the world. These children, whether in Latin America, Pakistan, or Indonesia, have no food, no shelter, no family. Abandoned by their parents, they wander the streets, begging, stealing, becoming victims of abuse.

One way to stave off hunger pains, and help them forget where they are, is to take drugs. While many children, who can be as young as 5 years old, may drink alcohol, smoke weed, or do other hard drugs, the majority prefer to “fly,” huffing glue. Yes, glue.  Glue made to repair shoes is the drug of choice for these homeless children. For a few pennies, which they can always beg, or steal (borrowing is not in their vocabulary), the pain brought on by hunger, heat, cold, or the simple fact that they were abandoned, can be alleviated by huffing. Give them an empty soda bottle, or a plastic bag, a few pennies worth of shoe glue, called “Resistol” (trademark) in Latin America, and they can forget. Be happy. Sleep.

However, all is not lost. An orphanage in Honduras has been getting kids off the streets and into a safe environment through dedication of their staff and with the help of Narconon Drug Rehab and other Atlanta charity groups.  Narconon of Georgia  helped a Honduran medical doctor establish the Narconon New Life Detoxification Program in this orphanage to aid in the growing epidemic of addicted street orphans in their country. The sauna program had astounding results with the children and has been praised by Dr. Vega, the Medical Director of the orphanage, as being beneficial to the children in their drug rehab efforts.

"The children arrive here and behave like little animals," stated a counselor at the orphanage. "They have no moral code, won’t listen to anyone, run wild. However, the Narconon Sauna Program removes the toxins from their bodies and they become happier, more social, like little children again. They become social people."

Narconon of Georgia is a non-traditional drug abuse treatment program which was founded in 1967 whose mission also includes drug education and working with children.  The Narconon  program provides body detoxification through a sauna and exercise program that helps eliminate or reduce cravings.  Then the client learns those life skills essential to success in life and the ability to stay clean.

NARCONON REFLECTION

Here is another Narconon reflection written by a Narconon drug treatment student. This student hopes that others will read it and realize that there is hope available for them – whether they are abusing cocaine, methamphetamine, pot or Xanax – there is hope.

“This morning, while exercising I was experiencing some discomfort then I realized I was not exercising in present time. I then began to apply a simple mental exercise I had learned at Narconon.

While doing this exercise, the discomfort left and I ran 2 miles.”

Narconon is full of surprises, including small miracles.

More Successes

NARCONON SUCCESS STORY

Here is a Narconon success story from someone who just graduated from the Narconon drug treatment program. It was written by a client who had been abusing alcohol, crack and heroin.

“When I first arrived here at Narconon, my mind had a very foggy cloud covering my perception of the world outside. I was definitely dazed and confused up arriving. My first few days back in the withdrawal section of the building was filled with a very pleasant atmosphere and home-like feel to the environment around me. I knew in my mind that I was begin saved yet again, and this was the start of my new path in life because I damn sure needed a new road to travel down.

Taking vitamins and consuming calcium and magnesium started to bring back my energy level slowly.

Each part of the program brought me closer and closer to freedom.

I have been taking good care of myself, being temperate, honoring my parents and trying to treat others well, just as it says in the Way To Happiness booklet.

I have been applying everything that I have learned on the program and I know that I am going to have a good life.

Special thanks to everyone who helped me.

Alcohol

May 11, 2009 by michelleatnarconon

MAN’S OLDEST DRUG

Through the ages, alcohol has been one of the pleasures of life. Since the Stone Ages, alcohol has played a role in human culture and has been used for medicinal, religious and social purposes.

The Greeks promoted moderation in drinking and temperance was praised by Plato. As the Roman Empire started to decay the abuse of alcohol became more rampant. Throughout much of history the use or misuse of alcohol is a reflection of the society.

And so it goes – Social pressures and society disorder find us in a world that promotes drinking. The number of alcohol abusers of all ages is increasing.

Young people raid their parents liquor cabinets, Workers meet at the bar after high pressure jobs and older people seek alcohol as a relief for loneliness.

No matter the age or social condition overdrinking contributes to cirrhosis, pancreatitis, brain damage and destruction of the nervous system. In the present time, the majority of traffic deaths are caused by driving under the influence.

Other Alcohol Facts

Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance in the U.S. According to the 2003 National Survey on Drug Use and Health 119 million Americans (20.1% of the population) use alcohol.

Every 30 minutes someone is killed in an alcohol related traffic accident in the U.S.

Drunk driving is proving to be even deadlier than what we previously knew. The latest death statistics released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), using a new method of calculation show that 17,488 people were killed in alcohol related traffic accidents last year. This means that nearly 800 more people were killed by alcohol abuse than the previous year.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is the result of chronic alcohol use during pregnancy. It is a serious health problem that tragically affects its victims and their families. Babies born with FAS weigh less and are shorter than normal. They tend to have smaller heads, deformed facial features, abnormal joints and limbs, poor coordination, learning problems, and short memories.

Fact: 750 infants are born with a severe pattern of physical, developmental and functional problems due to FAS each year in the U.S. Another 40,000 children are born with fetal alcohol effects (FAE) in the U.S

_________________________________

Every year it seems that there are more and more studies or articles on the hazards of alcohol abuse. The point has been made, with the real question remaining, “What can we do about the situation?”

For the society, the answer lies in drug and alcohol education at school and more controls over alcohol advertising at sports events.

For the individuals who have a loved one addicted to alcohol, the answer is Narconon New Life Program. There is no better answer.

Meeting

May 7, 2009 by michelleatnarconon

http://michelleatnarconon.shoutpost.com/68196/meeting

There is hopeful news for those offenders who are addicts and would like the chance to get their life together before it is marred by prison.

According to a CNN report, the White House is pushing for more drug courts and wants to fund them from the March spending bill.

In meetings with Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Obama pledged to address drug trafficking across the border with demand reduction. In order to facilitate this, the proposed solution involves treatment as an alternative to the prison system.

While there is not a specific bill yet, the climate is changing and most likely many judges will be more amenable to treatment as an alternative to incarceration.

Narconon of Georgia was originally founded as an alternative to incarceration and we have learned through the years that many Judges already prefer the opportunity to send a willing participate to treatment rather than to prison. They are especially pleased when they learn that the former addict has been transformed into a productive and happy citizen.

It is important that that where there is the opportunity for an offender to receive treatment rather than incarceration that the treatment is EFFECTIVE and that the client is actively participating. Right now, as the debate unfolds, is the time to inform the world that this is a viable solution. We do not want to provide any naysayers with the ammunition of failed treatment.

Narconon has a 76% success rate and you can count on us to back you up in your endeavor to help your clients.

Drugs Exposed to Teenagers

May 6, 2009 by michelleatnarconon

When people wonder which illegal drug their teen may be exposed to the most, many think of cocaine or hallucinogens.

However, a study shows that 56% of youths who first started using drugs in the past year began with marijuana.

"Marijuana has the reputation of being non-toxic and ’safe’ to use," comments Mary Rieser, Executive Director of Narconon Drug Rehab Georgia. "Despite the facts that students are given education on the dangers of tobacco smoking, marijuana apparently doesn’t come under the same scrutiny, and when teens use an illegal drug for the first time, it will start with marijuana. This often leads to ther drugs; those who start using marijuana are 9 times more likely to use cocaine than those who don’t. Marijuana often leads to drug addiction."

An estimated 1.5 million youths ages 12 to 17—an average of more than 4,000 per day—used a drug other than alcohol for the first time in the past year, according to data from the 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

The majority of youths reported that marijuana was the first drug they tried (56%), followed by prescription-type drugs used nonmedically (24%), and inhalants (17%).

Very few youths reported that their first use of drugs involved hallucinogens or cocaine (see figure below). The relative distribution of first-drug used has remained consistent over the past five years.

"Prescription-type drugs includes stimulants, sedatives, tranquilizers, and pain relievers," comments Ms. Rieser. "Non-medical use is defined as use without a prescription belonging to the respondent or use that occurred simply for the experience or feeling the drug caused."

Magic Pills

May 4, 2009 by michelleatnarconon

MAGIC PILLS

Mary Rieser CCDC

How are you feeling today? Not so well? Just plop down in front of the television tonight and you’ll soon be given the opportunity to diagnose yourself. Double check with your doctor if you want to make sure you’re right. Chances are your doctor is also familiar with the pharmaceutical commercials.

Do restless legs keep you awake? This can be fixed with a pill. If the side effects of the pill cause you to gamble away all your money, you don’t need to feel depressed for long. There are pills to fix this too, and a big bus will deliver them for next to nothing.

Before you go to bed decide if you want to sleep or have sex. There is a different pill for each. (The commercials don’t tell us what happens if you take both at once.) If you opt for the sex pill and notice at 2 am difficulty with your anatomy (if it lasts for more than four hours) the ad says to call your doctor. You might have to wait for a more convenient time for him to meet you at the office to fix the problem.

Too fat? Eyes watering or are they too dry? Are you afraid you might wet your pants or worse, do you have to wear long sleeves in summer? Don’t fret. It can all be fixed. Take a pill and enjoy life in living color.

As our population is lulled into the safety and normalcy of fixing everything with medication is it any wonder that prescription drug abuse and subsequent addiction are on the rise at an alarming rate?

Young people are more addicted now to what they find in the medicine cabinet, than what they find on the street, and for the first time, in some parts of the country, more people are dying from overdoses of pharmaceuticals than street drugs. Prescription drug abuse is the second most commonly abused substance now (excepting alcohol). This didn’t use to be the case.

People are getting addicted and we are told that some brains are more apt to have a drug problem than others. These brains apparently short wire and make the person crave drugs. How did these “brains” even learn about drugs- whether it be street or pharmaceutical? Should we be educating our kids about drugs on TV?

When I was a child, all my friends had Barbie dolls. We saw her on TV and had to have one – some girls had a dozen. We were obsessed. Fortunately, most of us outgrew our “Barbie brain” and didn’t need rehab. No one had to come up with a vaccine to make us not want Barbie. Barbie apparently is non-addictive long term. But today, in contrast, television ads are leading children to major drug addiction, not Barbie dolls.

Most people understand that there are times when the proper medication is life saving and necessary. Some ailments such as diabetes require long-term maintenance, but not everything can be treated with a pill.

Let’s get wise. There is no pill to bring the dead back to life or to cure young people who have become addicted.

Drug Seekers

May 4, 2009 by michelleatnarconon

WARNING

BEWARE OF DRUG SEEKERS

From the Executive Director of Narconon of Georgia

You may know a prescription “seeker”. These are individuals who try to get prescription medication that is either not medically indicated or prescribed for them. In other words, they want to abuse it.

If you are a dentist, you probably get calls from time to time from the seekers. These are the individuals who are not your patients, but hope that you don’t realize it. They are likely to call on holiday weekends because they know that during the holidays, dentists, like everyone else, are preoccupied and might be covering for someone else. The holiday weekends are longer, requiring a larger prescription.

A typical conversation from a prescription seeker might go like this: “I was in your office a couple of weeks ago and I was supposed to have that tooth taken out.” Acting as though you are sure to remember who they are, the seeker will try to steer you towards writing the pain prescription.

If you have not recognized them as a seeker by this time, other indicators in the conversation might be statements to the effect that they have tried Motrin in the past and it didn’t work or that they are allergic to pain medication of lower potency. The prescription seeker only wants “enough to get through the weekend” promising that they will make an appointment with you the following week to get the dental problem addressed.

Chances are that if you have a big practice, you won’t remember the names of all your patients. Here are some tips to avoid inadvertently writing pain prescriptions to persons seeking to get high:

  • If you can’t remember having ever seen the patient, then ask them what you look like, or what the office looks like if they say they have seen your associate. Wrong answers to these simple questions are sure tips that something is amiss.
  • Arrange to have access to your office computer from wherever you are so you can log in to your patient database to see if a caller really is a patient.
  • If someone comes to your office that you think might be abusing pain medications, learn the signs as listed below.

A seeker may also be someone living in your household. You can recognize them as the family member who needs to take some of your prescription medication because they are in pain. They may go to the doctor frequently, or from emergency room to emergency room describing fabricated up symptoms that require medication. You might recognize a seeker in your household by the fact that some of your prescription medication has come up missing.

Be compassionate. If you see someone trying to get pain medication inappropriately, chances are they are addicted. Recommend rehab to them and give them our phone number: 1-877-413-3073. WE ARE THE NEW LIFE PROGRAM!

Signs of Opiate Abuse

A person on an opiate such as heroin, morphine and prescription drugs will have constricted pupils that will look like pinpoints or small dots.

Someone on opiates usually itches and you can see the person lightly and frequently scratching himself.

If the method of ingestion is sniffing, his nostrils may appear raw and red.

If the method of ingestion is by injection there will be needle marks in arms, behind the knees or ankles.

Heroin users have been known to inject themselves under the tongue, or directly into open sores. These locations are not as easy to detect.

They may get very pale and sweaty or extremely thirsty.

Opiates affect people in different ways: some may get very "hyper" (active or frantic) and run around working or looking busy while others get very lethargic (nodding or doping off). The person may go around asking others for money. This will not be small change for cigarettes, but more like $20 or $40 here or there.

Don’t take any chances. Narconon of Georgia staff members are here to help.
